Mavericks Hope To Sign Jermaine O’Neal By All-Star Break

Jermaine O'Neal

The Dallas Mavericks have a tendency to stock up on veteran talent and it appears another may be joining the mix soon. That’s because Mark Cuban and company are confident they will sign free agent center Jermaine O’Neal, hopefully by the NBA’s All-Star break in February.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks — who continue to closely monitor the 36-year-old center’s progress as O’Neal works out in preparation for a comeback — hope to sign him by the All-Star break.

O’Neal previously played for the Golden State Warriors last season though was dealing with an injury and contemplated retirement during the offseason. Of course, many believed the former Indiana Pacers star was simply doing what he could to avoid participating in yet another training camp and hopeflly planned to latch on with a contender come the halfway point of the season.

Those who suspected such are essentially correct as O’Neal looks like a prime candidate to sign on with the Mavericks.

Multiple other teams have expressed interest in the center, including the Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder and even O’Neals former Warriors though Dallas seems to have the most available playing time for the veteran.

O’Neal would join a collection of talented vets like Dirk Nowitzki, Tyson Chandler, Rajon Rondo and more on an elite Dallas squad.
