You’ve probably wondered how much does it cost to make an iPhone before, most likely when you were throwing down $600 dollars for the full priced handheld computer. But the problem is, nobody really knows because Apple won’t tell us.
But one blogger decided he wanted to find out how much an iPhone costs to make, so he decided to do a little research.
Here’s what he found out, according to CNET, when he wanted to see how much does it cost to make an iPhone:
- Those costs are likely to range between $12.5 and $30 per unit.
- Labor costs are still a small part of the overall cost structure at between 2 percent and 5 percent of sales price.
- The high level (141 steps) of human interaction in the process could be automated. However, the fact that it isn’t implies that the cost of automation would be higher and the flexibility of the automated process would be lower.
So essentially depending on the model of the iPhone, it costs no more than $30 bucks per phone.
Granted, this likely doesn’t include all of the costs you wouldn’t see – patents, research and development, etc – but that’s still quite the uphike on pricing, eh?
Should be interesting to see if Apple opts to comment on this.
