Hoping to capitalize off the success of Sons of Anarchy, FX was quick to gobble up Mayans M.C. after watching the initial pilot episode. And now it appears that was quite a good choice, as Mayans MC is the most watched cable premiere in 2018.
The series, which is a spinoff from Sons of Anarchy, also directed and developed by Kurt Sutter follows a motorcycle club along the Cali-Mexi border and netted nearly 7 million viewers for their debut episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
That number includes the initial showing, three encore episode repeats and those who watched it on FX’s streaming app.
Ten years and a day after the series premiere of Sons of Anarchy, its spinoff debuted to remarkably similar ratings.
Mayans MC premiered Tuesday night to 2.53 million viewers and a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49. That’s almost identical to the premiere numbers for Sons of Anarchy on Sept. 3, 2008: 2.53 million and a slightly higher 1.2 demo rating. Sons continued to grow over the course of its run; the show’s final season in 2014 averaged 4.65 million same-day viewers.
Does Mayans M.C. have the sticking power of other popular shows? That remains to be seen, though cable hasn’t exactly been the best place for television series’ in the past, sans a few exceptions to the rule.
Mayans M.C. airs Tuesday nights at 10 EST on FX.
