Chicago Cubs Pitcher: Wrigley Field ‘Looks like Baghdad’

Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field

Look, I’m sure Chicago Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel meant no harm here, but sometimes thinking before you speak is a good thing to do.

Case in point, his most recent comment suggesting the iconic Wrigley Field ‘looks like Baghdad’ in its current state of construction.

One of the most beloved stadiums in baseball, Wrigley Field has been undergoing a facelift in effort to update it to a more modern design and things haven’t exactly gone as planned with the new scoreboard just being finished despite Opening Day being less than a week away.

That lead to Hammel expressing his views on the stadium.

“I’m excited,” the Chicago Cubs pitcher told MLBlogs Network. “It looks like Baghdad, but you know there’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow there. It is what it is right now, and we’re going to deal with it, but it’s exciting. It’s a long time coming and fun to be a part of, even if it will be a little sketchy to get around.”

Like I said, I don’t think Hammel was trying to take a shot but perhaps a different choice of words may have been a better decision. Perhaps suggest it looked like Mars? Or maybe he was just talking about Javier Baez‘s swing?
