Remember when home plate collisions were a thing in baseball? You know, throughout the history of the game? Well, they’ve more or less vanished thanks to new rules implemented by Major League Baseball.
Yes, it does provide more safety for the catcher and opposing runner, but you’d be lying if you denied the excitement of such. Granted, it’s not our body getting completely obliterated at home plate. But we’re also not making $2 million dollars a year to do so.
Either way, even though the home plate collision is generally null and void any longer, today there was a reincarnation of such during the A’s – Rays game in Tampa Bay when Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt was hammered by the Rays runner on a play at the plate.

The new baseball rule prevents catchers from blocking the plate and it doesn’t look like Stephen Vogt is doing anything of that nature. It also looks as if the Tampa Bay Rays runner, clearly going to be thrown out, decides to run into Vogt, which is of course is illegal.
I’m not sure that’s making Vogt’s shoulder feel any better though.
