The Milwaukee Brewers have been rumored to be in the market for a closer with talks suggesting they could be interested in a reunion with Francisco Rodriguez. Perhaps that might be a backup plan though as Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports the Brewers are discussing a trade for Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon.
What’s not known is if the eccentric closer has the Brew Crew on his no-trade list.
Sources: Milwaukee in serious discussions with Phillies to acquire Jonathan Papelbon. Unclear if Brewers are on Papelbon’s no-trade list.
Jonathan Papelbon struggled heavily at times last season for the Phillies and is still owed a significant amount of money, which could hamper any potential trade. That said, despite his struggles he still finished the season with a paltry 2.04 ERA and has not had an ERA over 3.00 since 2010.
It’s not known what type of pieces the Brewers would be sending back to the Phillies in the alleged and potential trade, though it’s doubtful to be much and will likely be determined depending on the amount of money the Brewers would pay Papelbon.
If the teams aren’t able to find a middle ground, Milwaukee is also said to have eyes on free agent Rafael Soriano.
