Cavs Rumors: Cavaliers are trying to trade center Brendan Haywood.
After moving Dion Waiters, the Cleveland Cavaliers don’t really have a ton of tradeable assets any longer, though one of their last remaining pieces is that of Brendan Haywood – or actually Brendan Haywood’s contract.
A bit weird, Haywood’s contract, despite only being paid over $2 million dollars this season, would allow the Cavaliers to bring back a player making upwards of $10 million dollars because Haywood was previously amnestied by the Dallas Mavericks.
Given that, Cavs rumors are swirling and suggesting Cleveland could be trying to trade Brendan Haywood before the upcoming deadline.
They have an enticing piece for a trade in the contract of backup center Brendan Haywood, whose $10.5 million salary next season is not guaranteed.
But because the Cavs are so far over the luxury-tax line, they’re prohibited from using Haywood’s contract to acquire a player in a sign-and-trade deal, which likely lessens the quality of player they could get for Haywood this summer.
It’s one reason why the Cavs are shopping Haywood now — his salary this year is $2.2 million — in their pursuit of a backup point guard or post player to fortify the roster in pursuit of a title this season.
Considering Haywood can be cut at season end with no financial impact, his $10 million dollar contract would be quite valuable to a team looking to rid themselves of a larger contract. Of course, the Cavs aren’t going to make a move just for the sake of it, so they’ll need to find enough reason to acquire a player who will be worth going over the luxury tax thanks to the contract of LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving.
