We’ve already seen teams prepare themselves to have cap space when key free agents like LeBron James and Kevin Durant are scheduled to become free agents, but the plans are usually only a few years out.
The Toronto Raptors appear to be taking that to the next level as they’re already said to be prepping themselves to make a run at signing Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Andrew Wiggins when he becomes a free agent – in 2021.
Yes, you read that correctly.
The Toronto Raptors are already looking to potentially bring Andrew Wiggins home when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, reports Cathal Kelly from The Globe and Mail. That’s in 2021 at the earliest — six years from now. The Raptors have zero players under contract in 2021 because nobody can sign for more than five years.
Nevertheless, plans are reportedly in motion.
There probably aren’t a ton of teams in the NBA with much (if any) salary on the books come the 2021 season, though if the Toronto Raptors are serious about signing Andrew Wiggins (as they should be) then that will impact roster moves in the coming seasons as they won’t want to commit much (if any) money which would prevent them from signing the Canadian native.
It’s a little silly to already begin preparing, but perhaps the early bird will indeed get the worm.
