With their NFC Championship game win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks are going back to the Super Bowl for the second time in as many seasons. They’ll be bringing a bit of controversy with them though unfortunately after they compared quarterback Russell Wilson to Martin Luther King Jr.
While the Seahawks’ social media team likely had solid intentions, things didn’t come across that way as Twitter reacted swiftly and it wasn’t positive.
That lead to the Seahawks quickly removed the tweet in which they compared Russell Wilson’s game on Sunday to King with the caption “We shall overcome”.
Yes, a quarterback had who had a rather poor game and tossed four interceptions coming back and leading his team to victory is about equal as Martin Luther King Jr. leading civil rights movements.
That said, as mentioned above the Seahawks did have good intentions with their tweet and were simply attempting to honor MLK on his special day. Unfortunately things didn’t work out that way as not only did they somewhat take an unintentional shot at MLK, they also upset the masses in the process.
Expect a well crafted apology from the team in the coming hours.
