Boston Red Sox Not Close On Cole Hamels Trade

Cole Hamels

The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox are not close on a Cole Hamels trade.

If the Boston Red Sox are to trade for Philadelphia Phillies ace pitcher Cole Hamels, it apparently isn’t going to be soon as they’re reportedly ‘not close’ to a deal.

On Sunday, word leaked suggesting the Red Sox were one of the teams to hold trade discussions with the Phillies regarding Hamels, though Boston’s offer was said to be Major League heavy. That’s not what the Phillies are seeking and the two sides appear to be at a stalemate regarding a Cole Hamels trade.

According to a major league source, the Red Sox aren’t remotely close on any sort of trade for Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels. The source says that the Sox have made Philadelphia aware of the parameters of what the Sox are willing to give up for the starter.

There are only a few teams who can afford to take on Cole Hamels’ salary, even fewer that he’d okay a trade to, so you have to think the Boston Red Sox are one of the select few teams who could even potentially acquire the southpaw.

Add in their solid minor league depth and the pieces are there to get the job done, though it doesn’t appear as if the Red Sox are interested in mortgaging their youth for Hamels – at least not yet. We’ll see if that changes in the coming weeks.
